- Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has openly backed the APC's decision to disqualify his Edo state counterpart, Godwin Obaseki
- Ganduje said the APC was guided by its constitution, electoral laws and Nigerian constitution before arriving at the decision
- The Kano governor also said the party is conscious of legal issues in order to avoid what happened in Bayelsa
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has said the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to disqualify his Edo state counterpart, Godwin Obaseki, from seeking reelection on its platform was the right one.
Ganduje stated this at a press briefing which held at the Government House Kano on Monday, June 15.
The governor also expressed optimism that the ruling party would win Edo polls without the incumbent’s efforts.
He said the APC was guided by the party constitution, electoral laws and the constitution of Nigeria before arriving at the decision.
He said crisis in democratic settings is normal as no political party is free from it, but noted that despite its challenges, the APC will win the forthcoming Edo election “because of high degree of mobilisation.”
Ganduje also said the party is conscious of legal issues in order to avoid the repetition of what happened in Bayelsa state recently where the party lost its seat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to discrepancies in the name of the APC deputy governorship candidate.
Ganduje's stance will not come as a surprise to political watchers in Nigeria.
The leadership of the ruling party stoutly defended the Kano state governor when he was seen in a viral video stashing dollars in his pocket.
Despite the outrage, the APC gave Ganduje its ticket for the governorship election in the northwest state which ended in controversy.
Although many say Ganduje has done well in terms of infrastructure, the viral video of him stashing dollars in his pocket continues to haunt the governor politically.
The governor might also be aligning with the powers that be in the APC to ensure that he s not prosecuted after he leaves office in 2023.
Meanwhile, Governor Obaseki is now favourite to clinch the PDP governorship ticket in Edo state. he was disqualified from the race in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obaseki's chances have become brighter after he met with key stakeholders within the opposition party over the weekend.
The Edo state governor met with his Rivers (Nyesom Wike) and Akwa Ibom (Udom Emmanuel) counterparts and also got the nod of former vice president and former PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to join the party.
