The Ondo chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, June 15, said the deputy governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi was yet to purchase the party's nomination forms.
According to The Nation, PDP explained that only six aspirants have bought its nomination and expression of interest forms.
Those who have paid for the forms have also collected a clearance certificate to confirm their intention to seek the party's mandate in order to be considered for election as governorship candidate.
Aspirants of the PDP include Hon Bode Ayorinde, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, Hon Banji Ben Okunomo, Eyitayo Jegede, Prince Godday Erewa and Olorogun Eddy Olafeso.
Last weekend reports were making the rounds in some quarters that Ajayi may have discreetly bought PDP's forms after speaking with the party's national leadership about getting the governorship ticket.
However, the PDP in a statement explained that allegations that Ajayi has been considered as the candidate of the party was not true and urged everyone to disregard the reports.
The opposition went on to assure all the aspirants that the party would not disregard their long-standing efforts and does not intend to provide unfair advantages to anyone.
PDP further said it was totally committed to the conduct of a free, fair, open, and transparent gubernatorial primary scheduled for July.
This development is coming as PDP gave the Ondo state deputy governor a list of conditions before he will be allowed by the party to contest for the governorship position on its platform.
Conditions listed for Ajayi by the opposition party include that he agrees to one term in office. After the first tenure, he will then hand over to a party loyalist.
The Ondo deputy governor has parted ways politically with his principal, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, over his ambition to contest in the governorship election.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a PDP chieftain said the deputy governor will not be resigning his position and is expected to formally announce his defection to the party this week.
Meanwhile, aspirants running on the platform of PDP have rejected the idea to step down for the state deputy governor.
According to the inside source, Ajayi has reportedly obtained the nomination form of the state main opposition party and he is expected to officially declare his interest ahead of the primary election.
The deputy governor has also been reaching out to top hierarchies of PDP in the state in a deal that will see other frontline aspirants peacefully bow out.
Permutations are similarly ongoing to pair Ajayi, who might have fallen down the pecking order with his boss, Eyitayo Jegede, another political strongman in Ondo state.
