- Governor Rotimi Akeredolu seems to be a popular figure within the Ondo APC
- Various political groups in the state have contributed their resources to buy the APC nomination form for the governor
- Governor Akeredolu recently lamented that the APC nomination form is expensive
Support groups angling for the re-election of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state have contributed N35million for the purchase of the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination and expression of interest forms.
The price of the forms has been pegged at N22million by the ruling party, even as the governor openly stated that it is expensive.
A former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr Victor Olabintan, presented the N22million cheque on behalf of other groups, stressing they contributed the money towards the re-election of the governor because of his performances.
Members of the support groups include lawmakers in the House of Assembly and members of various other groups in the state in support of the governor.
Recall that the APC recently dismissed reports suggesting the party's National Working Committee (NWC) has endorsed Governor Akeredolu for a second term.
The party was reacting to a statement credited to a group called Unity Mandate Agenda.
The group had issued a statement suggesting Akeredolu has the backing of the NWC and the APC national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshimhole.
“This is indeed a grievous falsehood intended to create disaffection among our members,” a statement by APC spokesman, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu read.
Meanwhile, Governor Akeredolu has declared that he has no plan to defect to another party to contest the governorship election.
The governor said he is sure of victory both at the APC party primaries and at the main elections while dismissing allegations of having plan B in case he losses at the ruling party's primary.
Akeredolu who spoke through his commissioner for information and orientation, Donald Ojogo, said he was not interested in the crisis rocking the Unity Forum of the party but would rather focus on the process of bringing everybody together.
He also said he was not bothered about a plethora of kinsmen from his hometown, Owo who are aspiring to be Ondo governor.
