Michael O’Neill: Stoke City confirm their manager tested positive before Man United's friendly

- Michael O’Neill is the latest manager to test positive for coronavirus

- The 50-year-old was due to lead the Potters to face the Red Devils in a friendly game

- The club said their handler will follow all the guidelines on the road to recovery

Stoke City have suffered a major setback after their manager Michael O’Neill tested positive to deadly coronavirus.

The Championship club made the news known minutes after the Potters' friendly match against Manchester United was canceled.

Since both the Premier League and the EFL competitions are scheduled for resumption next weekend, both sides were going to use the opportunity to test their readiness.

However, the fixture was called off after it was discovered one of Stoke's team had been infected with the virus, apparently, it was their manager whose result came back unfavourable.

The club said: "Stoke City can confirm that manager Michael O'Neill has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus following the latest round of testing on Monday (June 8).

"O'Neill had tested negative in the previous five rounds of testing.

"He will now follow the relevant guidance and undergo a period of isolation, whilst continuing to be in regular virtual contact with his coaching staff and players.

"Assistant manager Billy McKinlay will take charge of training as the Potters prepare for their game against Reading on June 20. "The club will be making no further comment on this matter."

The friendly would have been an upgrade to their preparations after staging an intra-squad face off over the weekend.

The two teams would have tasted action against another team for the first time since football actions were suspended three months ago.
