APC inaugurates screening, appeal committees for Edo guber primary

- Two new committees have been set up in the Edo chapter of the APC

- The committees are for screening and appeal ahead of the forthcoming governorship primary election

- The committees were established by Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the APC

Prior to the primary election which is expected to produce a governorship candidate in Edo, the All Progressives Congress in the state on Tuesday, June 9, made a major move.

According to a report by The Nation, screening and appeal committees chaired by Rabe Nafiu and Professor Abubakar Fari respectively have been inaugurated ahead of the primary poll.

The online newspaper also disclosed that the committees were set up by the party's national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, at its secretariat in Abuja.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the deputy governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu, had decried and vehemently opposed Oshiomhole's alleged attempt to run the affairs of the state government.

This came at a time when the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Oshiomhole opted for a direct primary in the state ahead of the gubernatorial election when the Edo chapter of the APC had chosen the indirect primary mode.

In his submission, Shaibu said that the indirect primary will be easier for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to supervise and ensure transparency.

The deputy governor called on the APC national chairman to respect the office of Governor Godwin Obaseki as the executive head of the state. He alleged that Oshiomhole is insisting on direct primary because he has something up his sleeves.

In a statement by his media aide, Benjamin Atu, Shaibu said: “The APC national chairman is insisting on direct primary because the result of the yet to be conducted direct primary election is already written by him, just waiting to be announced... "

In another post, Legit.ng reported that Obaseki had claimed that Oshiomhole, his predecessor, had no money when he contested the governorship election in 2007. Recall that Oshiomhole contested the Edo guber election in 2007 on the platform of the then Action Congress (AC) but lost to Oserheimen Osunbor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The current national chairman of the ruling APC, however, challenged the outcome of the election in court and was declared winner one year later.
