The committee constituted by Governor Godwin Obaseki to reconcile members-elect in the Edo state House of Assembly has been rejected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Chris Nehikhare, the publicity secretary of the PDP Edo state in Benin, said that the reason for such committee was baseless.

Nehikhare in a statement on Friday, June 5, said that the 14 people to reconcile could no longer be described as lawmakers-elect because their seats had been declared vacant for a long time.

According to him, the law states that vacant seats ought to be occupied by the runners up in the election which belongs to members of the PDP.

“Their refusal to subscribe to the oath of membership and allegiance all through the first session and first quarter of the 7th Assembly was tantamount to abdication of office.

“The governor should know that the seats are no longer available to them. Those 14 seats belong to PDP candidates who are also already in court,” he said.

He further said that the people concerned are already in court seeking to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting by-elections into the seats.

How forces in Abuja are causing problems in Edo state - Governor Obaseki

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that in his final battle to secure governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the primary scheduled for Monday, June 22, Obaseki constituted a committee to reconcile members-elect in the state House of Assembly.

Obaseki on Thursday, June 4, named the chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) and governor of Plateau state, Simon Lalong; Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Senator Ehigie Uzamere, as members of the committee.

In other news, Governor Obaseki has been in a running battle with his supposed godfather and national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole.

It was reported that the battle got to its crescendo when a faction of the party loyal to Obaseki in Edo suspended Oshiomhole at ward level and later got a court injunction which barred the former governor of Edo from parading himself as the national chairman of the party.
