There was commotion in the Portuguese Primeira Liga following an attack on the Benfica team bus right after their 0-0 draw with lowly Tondela on Thursday, May 4.

Benfica’s Julian Weigl and Andrija Zivkovic landed in the hospital following the incident as irate fans stoned the team bus as they leave the stadium.

Victory for hosts Benfica would have seen them go top of the standings above FC Porto, but fans were not happy at the draw with the lowly Tondela and went on rampage.

It was gathered that the team bus was shattered while the club manager was also ambushed along the motorway between Benfica's Estadio de la Luz stadium and their training facility.

The 24-year old Weigl and Zivkovic, 23 were reportedly taken to hospital for further examination due to the attack after being struck by shrapnel.

Club statement read in part: "We inform that, as a matter of precaution, players Julian Weigl and Zivkovic were immediately taken to Hospital da Luz to be observed, following the shrapnel that hit them."

Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram joined other stars to pay tribute to late George Floyd, an American man who died in the hands of the police.

The moving moment came after Thuran found the back of the net in the first half of his side's Bundesliga meeting against Union Berlin.

In his celebration, the French striker knelt down to his knees and blew his head in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter initiative.

His gesture came amid widespread protests across the US demanding for justice over the death of Floyd.

Legit.ng earlier reported that English Premier League clubs have agreed that the number of eligible substitutes during a game should increase from three to five when the season restarts.

The 2019/2020 EPL season which was suspended since mid-March due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic is billed to resume on June 17.

Clubs approve the temporary change from three substitutes to five as it is believed that players who have not been in competitive action will be struggling to regain their fitness.
