8 police officers shot dead as armed robbers attack Kogi bank

- Eight police officers were killed when a gang of suspected armed robbers attacked a bank in a town in Kogi

- The police station in the town was also reportedly attacked by the suspected robbers

- The robbery incident was confirmed by William Aya, the spokesperson of the police command in the state

Eight police officers were killed on Thursday, June 4, when a gang of suspected armed robbers attacked a bank in the Isanlu area of Kogi state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the robbers attacked the police station in the town and killed the DPO, two policewomen, and four other police officers.

After the attack on the police station, the robbers were said to have proceeded to the bank premises where one policeman was killed and another male victim died when a stray bullet hit him.

The robbery incident was confirmed by William Aya, the spokesperson of the police command in Kogi state.

Aya stated that he could not give details about casualty figure because it was still hazy

He promised to brief the press as soon as details are available.

Meanwhile, following the recent spike in insecurity in Sokoto state, a coalition of Concerned Sokoto Citizens (CSC) has called for urgent intervention, especially after the latest attack on Wednesday, May 27, left at least 70 people dead.

According to Daily Trust, the group, angered by the recent attack, lamented that since January, over 270 lives have been lost in 20 deadly attacks.

Professor Nasiru Gatawa speaking on behalf of the coalition said they were under siege and the government must take decisive action.

According to him, Sabon Birni is the most terrorised local government in the zone where bandits operate for several hours freely and even in a broad daylight with no help from the government in many cases.

In another report, the Nigerian military has assured Nigerians that its troops will prevent the interstate movement of armed bandits.

The military was reacting to worries from some quarters that armed bandits could escape from states where the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies are conducting various operations at the moment, to other states.

The coordinator, defence media operations, Major-General John Enenche at a press briefing on Thursday, May 28 at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, said the military has received complains from people in the north-west and north-central parts of the country on the issue.

Still on security, Katsina state governor, Aminu Masari has vowed never to grant amnesty to bandits again.

The governor made the declaration during an interview with the BBC Hausa service.

Masari had earlier granted amnesty to the bandits with the aim of quelling the uprising in the state, but the security situation has since gone from bad to worse.
