Brown Ideye says team felt sad about Yakubu’s World Cup miss

Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has narrated the mood in the Super Eagles camp right after their shocking exit at the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

Nigeria had a very slim chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition having lost 1-0 to Argentina in their opening game and then a 2-1 loss to Greece in the second group game.

The Super Eagles were condemned to win the final showdown against South Korea and also hope for results to go their way in the tie between Argentina and Greece, with both Group B matches to be decided simultaneously.

Kalu Uche put the Nigerian team ahead in the 12th minute but the Asians restored parity via Lee Jung-soo just before the end of the first half - as both sides went into the break 1-1.

Park Chu-young compounded the Super Eagles problems when he struck his free kick into the net four minutes into the second half leaving hapless Vincent Enyeama confused in goal to make it 2-1 in favour of South Korea.

Nigeria continued to push forward as the half wore on, with Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi going close and Kanu and Yakubu Ayegbeni combining well in the advanced positions.

However Yakubu stunned the whole world with what many describe as ‘the greatest miss ever’ when he couldn’t slot home a sitter just six yards into the net.

Describing Yakubu’s miss during an interactive session with Legit.ng, Brown Ideye said the team couldn’t believe the ball went wide.

“At first I thought the ball went in and came out from the other side because we were on the bench,” Ideye told Legit.ng during a live Instagram session.

“When Ayila passed the ball and we saw that he (Yakubu) was there alone, we all stood up and were almost on the touchline waiting to run in.

“We thought the ball went in and then came out from the back so we ran in (unto the pitch) at first. But when we saw the referee pointed ‘goal kick’, we were shocked like how is it possible not to score this. We felt really sad," he concluded.

Yakubu however made up for that miss three minutes later when he scored from the spot, but that was not enough as the game ended 2-2.

The party was over and Argentina defeated Greece 2-0 in the other game; they progressed with and South Korea after Nigeria failed to do their job.
