Edo, Ondo 2020: Falana calls for maximum security to put out tension

Ahead of the Edo and Ondo gubernatorial elections, a renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called for maximum security in the states.

According to Channels TV, Falana made the appeal during the Citizens’ Townhall on Voting Amidst COVID-19 on Wednesday, June 3.

The human rights lawyer explained that it had become necessary in order to quench tensions that may come up as a result of campaigns that are set to begin soon.

He argued that unlike the local council polls in Cross River and Benue states, the governorship elections slated for September 19 will draw opposition parties to participate in the exercise.

“So tensions will be high, you will need maximum security to guarantee law and order in both states and then monitor some of the political leaders in those two states,” he said.

The senior lawyer while predicting a low turnout of voters on election day, asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide facemasks in view of the COVID-19 pandemic for those who may not be able to afford it.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that as the Edo and Ondo governorship elections approach, INEC has directed participating political to submit appropriate documents.

In a virtual meeting with the political party leaders, INEC's national chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, asked parties planning the direct mode of primary elections to submit their membership register to the commission.

He also asked the parties planning to adopt the indirect primary mode to submit to the INEC the list of delegates who will be participating in the elections.

In a related development, INEC has set some parameters that will be used during voting exercises at the forthcoming Ondo and Edo gubernatorial elections.

The conditions were giving at INEC's virtual meeting held on Wednesday, June 3, which was convened by its national chairman.

Speaking at the meeting, INEC's national commissioner, Okechukwu Ibeanu, made it plain that there must be compulsory wearing of face masks by all voters.

Ibeanu stated that anyone who refuses to wear or is found without one at polling units will be asked to leave the place.
