COVID-19: Nigerian government approves five airports for flight resumption

- The federal government has approved only five airports for planned resumption of domestic flights in the country

- Captain Musa Nuhu, the director-general of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) made the disclosure in a letter dated June 1, 2020

- The NCAA said the airports approved for flights must comply with the existing COVID-19 protocols for approvals

The Nigerian government has approved only five airports for planned resumption of domestic flights in the country from June 21.

Captain Musa Nuhu, the director-general of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) made the disclosure in a letter dated June 1, 2020, with ref NCAA/DG/AIR/11/16/121, Daily Trust reported.

According to the NCAA, the five airports to be opened are:

1. Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos

2. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja

3. Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa Rivers state

4. Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano

5. Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri

The letter noted that other airports will be added gradually after a review and assessment.

NCAA said the airports approved for flights must comply with the existing COVID-19 protocols.

The agency stated that the closure of Nigerian airports to international flights will continue until a date of resumption is announced.

Nigerian airports have been shut since March 27 as a measure to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, on Monday, June 1, challenged anyone who has ever given him a bribe to come forward.

The minister made the statement when reacting to allegations from some Nigerians who claimed that the ministry of aviation demands money before flights are approved.

He dismissed the accusations against him as false, insisting that has never asked for or received a bribe while carrying out his duties.

Speaking at the presidential task force on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, Sirika pointed out that he has never asked for or collected bribe from any aviation business man or woman.

“For us in this government, we are very conscious of the weight of responsibility on our heads. I’ve been minister five years now and I challenge anybody before all of these cameras," he said.

He said the ministry of aviation was ready to provide documents to show that monies are not charged for approval of flights.

In another report, Governor Udom Emmanuel has declared that Ibom Air, Akwa Ibom state-owned airline will make Nigeria proud.

The governor made the declaration at a ceremony on Tuesday, May 19 to herald the arrival of the airline's 4th aircraft in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.

In his remarks, while unveiling the aircraft, the governor expressed appreciation to God for his benevolence to the state and for guiding his administration to attain remarkable achievements for Akwa Ibom state and her people.

He applauded the management of Ibom Air for maintaining top class service, noting that within a short period of its emergence in the Nigerian aviation industry, the airline is fast dominating the industry and with its latest aircraft, make in-roads into the West African sub-region.
