Nigerian lady succeeds, becomes only best black student in Canadian school

- A Nigerian lady with the name Chika Stacy Oriuwa has graduated top of her class at the University of Toronto

- In her valedictorian message, she advised black students to always identify with their strong sense of self

- The medical doctor is the first black person to be chosen as a valedictorian in 14 years in the school

A Nigerian lady, Chika Stacy Oriuwa, has made the nation really proud as she graduated from the University of Toronto (UT) school and became a doctor.

Oriuwa was the only black student out of a class of 259 students when she enrolled at UT in 2016, CBC reports.

On Tuesday, June 2, the student did not only graduate as the best student but was the school's valedictorian, making her the second black person to have that feat since the inception of the school. She was the first black student in 14 years with the honour.

In 1992, Dr Kristine Whiteheads, a present practitioner in Ottawa, was the first black individual with the honour.

"I am extremely pleased to see that Dr. Oriuwa has been recognized by her peers, it is a tremendous honour," Whitehead recognizes Oriuwa’s feat.

The Nigerian said that she considers it a great privilege to study medicine, saying that it is also a big responsibility to be a doctor.

In speaking about her journey as a person of colour, she stressed the need for black students to have a strong sense of self in their academic pursuit.

"Knowing who you are and what you stand for and what you will and will not tolerate will allow them to encounter any adversity and overcome any adversity," she said.

Oriuwa said that though her determination to succeed gave her strength, the power of the supportive community she had also played a big role in her success.

During her studentship, the Nigerian student mentored people and advocated for the rights of black students.

It should be noted, however, that 24 black students were admitted into the school for the class of 2024, making it the largest black group in Canadian history.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Anita Osariemen Omonuwa had three first-class distinctions from the University of Reading, UK (LLB), University of Birmingham, UK (LLM), and the Nigerian Law School (BL).

According to her public profile, she graduated top of her class at the Nigerian Law School which got her several prizes such as the Council of Legal Education Star Prize, best outstanding academic performance, among others.

In other news, Austin Chibuike Ikpeama is another Nigerian with great academic record abroad. His brother, Ikpeama O Tochuckwu, said Chibuike got his PhD at the young age of 24 after finishing strongly from the University of Sciences, Philadelphia.
