- More political bigwigs have thrown hats into the political ring for APC primary in Edo state
- Apart from frontline aspirants including Godwin Obaseki and Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Pius Odubu and others have also purchased the interest forms
- This apparently portends a setback for the political ambition of Ize-Iyamu who has been favoured by Edo APC faction led by Adams Oshiomhole
As intrigues continue to play out in the politics of Edo state, the ploys being channelled to make Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu the flagbearer of the All Progressive Congress (APC) suffered a setback on Tuesday, June 2.
Loyalists, who belong to Adams Oshiomhole APC faction in Edo, have been reported to have backed down after more aspirants joined Governor Godwin Obaseki in picking nomination and expression of interest forms.
It would be recalled that the crisis buffeting Edo APC hit the crescendo following a spark in the feud between Obaseki and his former godfather Oshiomhole, with the former probing the latter of alleged white paper corruption.
Ize-Iaymu, who was recently given a waiver to contest by APC, seemed to be coasting in victories with the backing of the APC national chairman and other Edo political leaders.
But in a sudden twist, the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has a herculean task ahead of him as many henchmen in Edo have also thrown the hat into the ring.
Apart from him and Obaseki, top Edo politicians including Dr. Pius Odubu, Chris Ogiemwonyi, and Osaro Obazee, former chairman of Oredo local government council, have also bought nomination forms.
Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, former majority leader of the Edo state House of Assembly, has also sought interest in becoming the flagbearer of the party in the coming primary scheduled for June 22.
Meanwhile, Ize-Iyamu has welcomed the development, saying it will strengthen the internal democracy of the ruling party and help demonstrate that "ambition can be pursued without rancour."
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that with less than four months into the governorship election in Edo, the rancour in the APC chapter of the state seems to be growing in wings more than imagined.
The manifestation of the brewing crisis was clearly shown after Pastor Ize-Iyamu, governorship aspirant of APC, said those who brought the incumbent governor, Obaseki, have the right to look into an alternative way.
