Abuja-based businessman cries out as AMAC demands N250k disinfection fee

A Nigerian businessman identified as Olagoke Balogun on the microblogging platform, Twitter, has come out to decry the treatment being meted on struggling businesses in Abuja by the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Abuja Municipal Government.

Balogun who is the CEO of a popular restaurant, So Fresh, claimed that the council has asked his company to pay the sum of N250k or risk being sealed within the next three days.

"This is the latest way AMAC and the Abuja Municipal Government are fleecing struggling business in Abuja. So Fresh is to pay N250,000 or risk being sealed within the next 3 days," his tweet read.

In a different tweet, Balogun noted that the mistreatment has been going on for over two weeks. In addition to that, he said businesses have been mandated to make payments to a private account number.

Balogun said: "The harassment over the last 2 weeks have been unpresented. And guess what, payment is been mandated to a private account; Holmes Multi-media Synergy Ltd. What kind of madness is this."

Reacting to his post, a Twitter user said: "This is an illegal collection. AMAC is not in charge of waste or disinfecting premises. That is the job of Abuja Environmental. There is a court decision on this after Abuja Environmental took them to court."

Another user who raised suspicions about the use of a private account number said: "A couple of things here. This is fraud and I don’t think you should pay. Definitely not to a private company’s account. It’s a violation of several public procurement rules."
