Coronavirus: Governor Fayemi eases lockdown in Ekiti

- Governor Fayemi has eased the coronavirus lockdown in Ekiti state

- According to the governor's new directive, residents are now allowed to pursue their businesses from Monday to Friday, within the hours of 6am to 8pm

- Civil servants on Grade Level 8 and above have also been asked to resume for duty

Governor Kayode Fayemi has relaxed Ekiti state’s lockdown to allow residents to pursue their businesses from Mondays through Fridays, within the hours of 6am to 8pm.

The governor disclosed this on Sunday, May 31, during a statewide broadcast, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Governor Fayemi also instructed public officers on Grade Level 8 and above are to resume for duty while those on Grade Level 7 and below are to remain at home till further notice.

The governor stated that the new directives take effect from Monday, June 1.

He also stressed that the dusk-to-dawn curfew will resume daily at 8pm and will last till 5.59 am of the following morning.

The governor also announced that the state’s molecular laboratory will be commissioned on Monday to facilitate testing for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, barely a week after replacing lockdown with a curfew in Rivers, Governor Nyesom Wike has given a fresh hint of another lockdown in the state as Covid-19 cases spike.

Speaking during a state-wide broadcast marking his fifth year in office on Friday, May 29, the Rivers governor lamented that the people of the state are shunning Covid-19 guidelines and protocols.

Wike expressed that the protocols guiding the use of facial masks were not formally followed, while similarly decrying that 12 people have been killed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the governor, the death of the 12 people as a result of coronavirus complications was a big tragedy to the state and the immediate families of the deceased.

"Regrettably, we have observed that the advisories, directives and regulations on social distancing and the compulsory wearing of face masks are being ignored at alarming proportions in the state, much to our collective discomfort and peril," he said.

Wike said the state has identified banks, businesses and shopping centres that not adhering to the face masks guidelines - an act which he described as "very irresponsible and risky behaviours in the face of the invisible and ravaging pandemic."

The governor also stressed that people are spotted at unauthorised social gatherings in what is fuelling the spike in the cases of coronavirus in the state. He called for advice from well-meaning residents of Rivers, saying the state will "welcome constructive criticisms devoid of politics and mischief."
