- Truly, there is a chance for young Nigerians to take over the leadership of the country
- Governor Rotimi Akeredolu proved this with his latest appointment in Ondo state
- Akeredolu has picked a 26-year-old Igbo female, Ngozi Ugochi-Igbo, to be his special assistant on gender, research, and documentation
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has appointed a 26-year-old female of Igbo extraction, Ngozi Ugochi-Igbo, as his new special assistant on gender, research, and documentation.
Although the appointment by Akeredolu has sparked reactions on social media among critics who claim that she just finished the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, Ngozi has already resumed her duty.
Advocating self-defence for young females in the state, the new appointee called on parents to allow their girl children to learn Taekwondo.
Ngozi used the sad story of the recent murder of the UNIBEN student, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, as a point of reference to buttress her argument.
On her Facebook page on Sunday, May 31, Ngozi wrote: "Uwa was not in a bar or walking down the street wearing a short skirt (one of the many myopic justifications we give for r'pe occurrence) she was in the church, reading...
"My take is if the society cannot change for the better to allow women to live long enough to achieve their dreams then we (women) need to change, we need to be able to protect ourselves or at least have a fighting chance.
"Parents, can you please give your daughter a fighting chance? Uwa might still be alive today if she had some skills to defend herself."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the news of the murder of Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) from the Department of Microbiology, had gotten to the Edo government.
Omozuwa was killed in a church in the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin by a gang of men after they forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
In response to the sad and rather unfortunate development, Governor Godwin Obaseki had ordered for the investigation and immediate arrest of the culprits.
On his Twitter page, Governor Obaseki assured residents that the police command in the state is on the matter and that in no time, Vera's killers will be tracked, arrested, and prosecuted.
