Benue LG elections: PDP clears all chairmanship, councillorship positions

- All 23 local government chairmanship seats and available 276 councillorships in Benue state have been won by the PDP

- The state's independent electoral commission announced the results on Sunday, May 31

- The All Progressives Congress did not take part in the election which was contested by just five parties

The local government council elections in Benue state has ended heavily in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Vanguard reports that the party had a clean sweep of the council elections which held across the 23 local government areas of the state despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The party also won all the 276 councilorship positions in the election.

The results were confirmed by the chairman of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, Terso Loko.

Loko said the voting in the 3,691 polling units across the state were quite peaceful.

Announcing the result, Loko said: “By the powers conferred on me as the Chief Returning Officer of the election and given the returned results, I declare the PDP victorious in the 23 chairmanships and 276 councilorship elections.

“With the conclusion of the elections and declaration of results, the Chairmen-elected will on Monday morning be issued their certificates of return at the Commission’s headquarters in line with the provisions of the law.”

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was missing in the polls in which only five political parties Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), African Action Congress (AAC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the PDP.

This Day reports that analysts said PDP won because of the last-minute withdrawal of the APC, another very strong political party that could have given the winner a run for its money in the polling exercise.

Meanwhile, in other news from Benue, Legit.ng reported earlier that the state government reversed his earlier decision to reopen churches, mosques, markets, and other public places in the state that were closed to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Governor Samuel Ortom made the announcement while briefing journalists at Government House in Makurdi.

The Benue state governor explained that the state government decided to accept the advice of the federal government, and religious bodies against lifting the ban on opening worship centres and other public places.

He went on to add that Benue is part of the Nigerian federation and would work in collaboration with relevant agencies.
