Maikanti Baru: President Buhari mourns late NNPC GMD

President Muhammadu Buhari has mourned the immediate Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Kachalla Baru.

The president expressed his condolence over the death of the erstwhile NNPC boss as contained in a tweet by his special aide on new media, Bahir Ahmad, on Saturday, May 30.

Legit.ng reported that Baru died at the age of 60 after a brief battle with illness with his death plunging the NNPC fraternity into mourning.

Ahmad said the president consoled with the families and friends of the deceased former NNPC GMD.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari also sympathised with professional colleagues of Baru over the demise of one of them.

"President Muhammadu condoles with family, friends and professional colleagues of former Group Managing Director of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru," Bashir Ahmad said in a tweet on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, in his own tribute, Mele Kyari, current NNPC GMD described Baru as a mentor who "was of exemplary character and disposition."

Announcing the death of his former senior colleague, Kyari described the former NNPC boss as a brother, friend and mentor.

Maikanti Baru in view

Born in July 1959 in Misau, Bauchi state, Baru attended Federal Government College, Jos for his secondary education where he graduated in 1978.

In 1982, he obtained his bachelor of engineering degree from Ahmadu Bello University. Baru had a doctorate in Computer-Aided Engineering from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.

He was the 18th GMD of NNPC, a position he occupied till he announced his retirement from the corporation in July 2019 when he clocked the age of 60.

Baru sadly passed away only two months away from his 61st birthday.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari has described the late retired Supreme Court justice, Adolphus Karibi-Whyte as a jurist who has brought honour to the country.

The Nigerian president in a statement through his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said Karibi-Whyte was a patriotic and resourceful legal luminary.

Buhari expressed his condolences to the government and people of Rivers state over the passing of the legal icon.
