Football action in Italy has been given the green light to return on June 20 after about eight weeks of suspension due to coronavirus pandemic.

The country's sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora confirmed the latest development, adding that the 2019-20 season must end by August 20.

Serie A has been on suspension since March 9 shortly after Juventus recorded their first COVID-19 case, however, the players have resumed training since early May.

According to BBC, the Italian football federation (FIGC) resolved in one of their crucial meetings that the league has to come to an end by August 20.

The country's apex football body revealed that it intended to ensure the top three divisions conclude their seasons properly.

It added that should there be any reason for any of them to be halted again, then they will proffer other means of wrapping it up - a play-off would have to be devised.

Meanwhile, the owner of Serie A bottom side Brescia believes the decision to bring back football in the face of the pandemic was a "crazy decision".

"It's too much for the players," he told BBC World Service's World Football show.

"We stopped [training] for two months. It is dangerous to restart it playing three games a week. So I'm worried about injuries and the hot weather which is going to be terrible in Italy more than Germany."

But Super Eagles defender who plays for Udinese William Troost-Ekong has a contrary opinion on the return of football despite the impact of COVID-19 on the world at the moment.

He said: "It's lifted everybody's spirits, As long as we can do it in the right way without too many risks and setting the right example for the country, I think it's a good thing to be doing."
