President Buhari pleads debt cancellation for African countries

President Muhammadu Buhari has pleaded with financial institutions and developed countries to cancel the debts of needy countries, especially in Africa to enable them to cope with the difficulties caused by COVID-19.

The Nigerian president made the plea on Thursday, May 28, when participating in a virtual meeting convened by Canada, Jamaica and the secretary-general of the United Nations.

He also asked developed nations to render assistance to poor countries in the fight against the coronavirus.

The president told the developed nations not to adopt the every man for himself attitude, warning that such a disposition could have serious consequences for the globe.

Buhari pointed out that standing together in this pandemic is the only way the global community would be able to ensure the recovery for economies and societies.

In another report, presidential media aide, Femi Adesina, has said there is nothing wrong with the federal government borrowing to finance developmental projects that will benefit the Nigerian economy.

Adesina was said to have made the statement when he called from his Aso Rock office to answer questions during a programme on Fresh FM, The Nation reports.

He urged Nigerians to stop criticising efforts of the federal government in securing more loans to develop the country, pointing out that Nigeria's economy has the capacity to absorb more loans.

To health news, there is an unfolding drama is Kogi as Governor Yahaya Bello-led government insisted that the north-central state is still free of coronavirus scourge despite fresh discovery. Legit.ng notes that the state's utter denial coincided with the report by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announcing two cases in the state.

Saka Haruna Audu, Kogi health commissioner, in a statement on Wednesday, May 27, said the state has conducted hundreds of Covid-19 tests out of which none came out positive, The Cable reported.

He stressed that Kogi has a full testing capacity and any attempt to force the state to announce cases of coronavirus will be completely rejected.

Meanwhile, a group, West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA) Nigeria, has urged the federal government to provide special packages for personnel of security agencies who worked to ensure that the lockdown in the country was largely successful.

WAANSA Nigeria, a foremost civil society group focused on security issues, peace and development, made the call via a statement on Monday, May 25.

The statement, signed by Temitope Lamidi, was released after the inauguration of WAANSA Nigeria Global Wear Orange Against Gun Violence campaign coming up on Friday, June 5.
