- The Bauchi state governor said the PDP needs Lamido in its request to wrestle power from the APC in 2023
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governors' forum has passed a vote of confidence in the leadership competence of Sule Lamido, Jigawa state's former governor.
The PDP and its governors said Lamido remains the national leader and face of the party and democracy in Nigeria, The Guardian reports.
The PDP's message was relayed by the governor of Bauchi state, Bala Muhammed, on Monday, May 25.
Legit.ng gathers that Governor Muhammed spoke on behalf of the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Aminu Tambuwal, during a courtesy visit to Lamido in Jigawa alongside other Bauchi PDP leaders.
The Bauchi state governor said the party cannot afford to lose the wisdom of Lamido at the point when it is strategising for the 2023 presidential election.
The Guardian notes that the PDP's solidarity message to Lamido was informed by a report blaming the former Jigawa state governor for the crises rocking the party in the state.
“Our colleagues the PDP Governors say I should come and assure him that his integrity, pedigree and his respect is intact. We cherish him, we adore him, he is the face of PDP and the face of democracy," Governor Muhammed said.
“We just came to appease our leader who we found that there are some tendencies that will make him unhappy."
He added that the PDP needs Lamido's support in its quest to wrestle power from the ruling APC in 2023.
In his reaction, Lamido said God has been kind to him, adding that it is the younger generation that has to take responsibility.
"The nation has been so kind to me it gave me the space to grow. Our leaders have been good I thank God for what he has used me to do in my life.
“Now it is up to you the younger generation to carry on the battle,” he said.
In another related report, the Ondo chapter of the PDP has announced its readiness to welcome the state's deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, if he defects from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The opposition party said it had nothing against the defection of Ajayi from the APC as is being speculated in some quarters.
