COVID-19: Benue reverses decision to reopen churches, mosques, and other public places

- Worship centres, markets and other public places in Benue state will no longer be opened after the ban was previously lifted

- The state government bowed to pressure by reversing the earlier order after accepting the advice of CAN and the federal government

- However, the Benue state government said earlier restrictions announced concerning burials, weddings, are still in place and must not exceed 30 persons

Benue state government has reversed his earlier decision to reopen churches, mosques, markets, and other public places in the state that were closed to contain the spread of coronavirus.

According to Daily Trust, Governor Samuel Ortom made the announcement while briefing journalists at Government House in Makurdi.

The Benue state governor explained that the state government decided to accept the advice of the federal government, and religious bodies against lifting the ban on opening worship centres and other public places.

He went on to add that Benue is part of the Nigerian federation and would work in collaboration with relevant agencies.

Recall that the Benue state government had ordered the reopening of churches and mosques for religious worships some weeks after they were shut over the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The government, however, directed that the churches and mosques must hold staggered worship sessions to allow room for social distancing.

A statement issued by one of Governor Samuel Ortom's aides indicated that this was part of the decisions reached on Thursday, May 21, in Makurdi at the end of a joint meeting of the Benue State Executive Council and the State Action Committee on COVID-19 presided over by the governor.

Earlier, Legit.ng previously reported that the Kano State Council of Ulamas has opposed the decision by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to allow mosques and churches to resume congregational prayers amid rising cases of Covid-19 in the state.

The clerics insisted that the decision could further increase the rate of infections in the state. Speaking on BBC Hausa Service, the head of the council, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, said the government should have considered the rising cases of infections before taking such a decision.

In other news, Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on Sunday, May 24, revealed to Nigerians what God told him about the coronavirus pandemic.

Adeboye said that it was revealed to him that all children of God throughout the world will be protected from the calamity that comes with the virus.
