2023: I can vie for president, Senate if I so wish - Ngige

- Chris Ngige has said as a politician, he can vie for any elective position in 2023

The minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, has reacted to speculations that he is planning to contest for governorship in Anambra state.

According to him, he is a politician and has the right to vie for any position, including the office of the president.

He disclosed this at the weekend after presenting cash and food items estimated as COVID-19 palliatives to the poor and vulnerable persons in his community in Alor, The Sun reports.

Yes, there have been speculations that I am eyeing the governorship of Anambra State. They have written about it a lot of media. I am a politician; they have the right to speculate on my next move. My next move is very vast. Elections will come in 2023, I have a right to vie for any position. I can vie for Senate or for President if I so wish."

According to the minister, Anambra will be having another governorship election latest November 2021 and he is not disqualified. "I have a right to say I can run,” he added.

The minister, however, said he is currently on national assignment and is focused on the challenges of his ministerial position, not the future political ambition.

Sharing the COVID-19 palliatives estimated at N15 million, the minister said it will get to very "vulnerable person" in the community, whether APC or PDP, APGA, Accord, APA, PPP.

On the upcoming first anniversary of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure, Ngige said a lot has been achieved by the government.

On the list of achievements is the tremendous progress in agriculture, infrastructural development and in the war against corruption.

Ngige recently spoke against the sack of employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. He urged employers to first obtain clearance before attempting to sack workers.

According to him, the government is seeking to create more jobs during the pandemic.
