- Amid ravaging coronavirus crisis, northern governors have begged President Muhammadu Buhari to support them with special Covid-19 funds
- In a memo released after their meeting, the governors expressed worry over the spike of Covid-19 cases in the region
- The governors also expressed disappointment over gross violation of inter-state ban by people travelling from Covid-19 high-risk states
Governors under the aegis of Northern Governors' Forum (NGF) have appealed to President Muhammdu Buhari to support the region with special Covid-19 intervention funds in the ongoing battle against novel coronavirus.
Legit.ng notes that the northern states have been terribly buffeted recently by the highly-ravaging scourge since taking a dangerous twist against 35 states including the FCT.
Apart from Lagos which is the epicentre of the virus, coronavirus has hooked down states like Kaduna, Jigawa and Bauchi, with Kano also coming second on the log of states badly affected.
The president had approved 10 billion for Lagos to tackle the virus. And in a bold move, the northern governors pleaded for special intervention funds.
In a communique on Wednesday, May 20, the governors based their appeal on the ground that their states account 54% of the total Covid-19 cases recorded in the country, Sahara Reporters reports.
"The forum resolved to continue their appeal to the federal government for support to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic, as the Northern region now has about 54 per cent of the national cases and 70 per cent of new infections,” the communique read.
Simon Lalong, chairman of the forum and governor of Plateau state, also expressed worry, saying northern states still witness a gross violation of inter-state ban imposed on states by the president.
"On enforcing closure of inter-state boundary roads, the Northern governors again expressed disappointment that despite several measures taken, including Presidential orders, there are still violations where people move from one state to another through compromise and use of illegal routes," the governors submitted in the memo.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that northern governors have lauded the appointment of Ambassador Ibrahim Agboola Gambari as the chief of staff by President Buhari.
Lalong described the appointment of Gambari as timely and well deserved.
It would be recalled that after a big fuss and heightened conversation on who succeded late Abba Kyari, President Buhari caught everyone on the hook by settling for the 75-year-old diplomat and Ilorin prince.
