Salary delay: House of Reps resolves FCT health workers' pay

- Efforts have been put in place by the Femi Gbajabiamila-led leadership of the House of Reps to solve the delay in salaries of health workers

- The health workers under JOHESU, who have been aggrieved by the delay of their monthly due, will now receive their pay on Friday, May 22

- FCT minister, also at the meeting, attributed the delay to the newly-introduced salary payment process called IPPIS

Amid ongoing scare over coronavirus pandemic, House of Representatives has meddled into the rift between the health professionals under the umbrella of Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the FCT over delay in salaries payment.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 20, Femi Gbajabiamila, the speaker of the lower chamber, assured that round-table discussion has been channelled to the aggrieved parties and the salaries of the health workers will be paid.

In a meeting which has Osagie Ehanire, health minister, FCT minister Mohammed Bello, accountant-general of the federal Ahmed Iddris and the JOHESU leadership, Gbajabiamila raised an eyebrow against the treatment of the health workers who are leading the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.

He assured that the health professionals will be paid their salaries on or before Friday, May 22, 2020, saying the leadership of the House will not armfold itself when masses are being denied their rights.

On its own part, FCT minister Bello said the delay in payment of salaries was as a result of the payment system known as Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Bello said the country has been experiencing some hiccups with the IPPIS process, adding that with the intervention of House leadership, all the issues would be resolved through the office of the accountant-general of the federation

"As we speak, we've done the payroll and payment will be made on or before the 22nd of this month. Today is 20th, I can assure that they will get their salary before the 22nd," health minister Ehanire assured the leadership of the House.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the House of Representatives has questioned Ehanire regarding the whereabouts of the Chinese doctors who came to Nigeria to assist in the Covid-19 fight.

The lawmakers demanded full details of the activities of the Chinese doctors during their plenary on Tuesday, May 19.

The lawmakers said they are not satisfied with the statement of the health minister that the Chinese doctors are not guests of the Ministry of Health but that of a Chinese firm in Abuja.
