Coronavirus: Nigeria records 284 new COVID-19 cases, total now 6677

- The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 284 new cases of COVID-19 in the country

- Lagos still led with 199 cases of COVID-19, followed by Rivers with 26 cases and Oyo with 19 cases

- With the new cases, Nigeria now has a total of 6,677 cases, 1,840 recoveries and 200 deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 284 new cases of COVID-19 in 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The federal health agency made the announcement late Wednesday night, May 20, via its verified official Twitter handle.

With the new cases, Nigeria now has a total of 6,677 cases, excluding Kogi and Cross River states that are yet to record a single case.

Legit.ng notes that eight new deaths were recorded, bringing the total number of fatalities to 200, while the number of discharged patients increased from 1,734 to 1,840.

Lagos recorded its highest daily toll ever on Wednesday, with 70 percent of the total cases; It has confirmed 199 cases of COVID-19, followed by Rivers with 26 cases and Oyo with 19 cases.

Before Wednesday, the highest figure recorded by Lagos was 183 cases, which were confirmed on Thursday, May 7.

FCT and Borno recorded eight cases each, Plateau state had seven, Jigawa had six, Kano had five, Abia had two while Ekiti, Delta, Kwara and Taraba all had one case each.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Nigerian government had dismissed the claim by the US president, Donald Trump, on the use of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, to prevent COVID-19.

Both the health minister, Osagie Ehanire and the director-general of the NCDC, Chikwelugo Ihekweazu, on Tuesday, May 19, warned Nigerians not to listen to the US president’s claims on hydroxychloroquine.

Enahire said though the presidential task force on COVID-19 was carrying out a study on the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine, the medicine had not been approved for the treatment of the virus.

He warned Nigerians not to engage in self-medication, noting that the hydroxychloroquine should only be taken based on doctor’s prescription.
