- It was a show of displeasure as two groups staged a protest against and in support of Adams Oshiomhole in Benin
- The pro-Oshiomhole group accused the incumbent governor, Godwin Obasekin, of biting the finger that fed him
- The protest came days after Edo government instituted civil and criminal actions against Oshiomhole over alleged funds misappropriation
As intrigues continue to play out in the politics of Edo ahead of the state gubernatorial election, two groups on Monday, May 18, staged a protest in support and against Adams Oshiomhle, All Progressive Congress (APC) chairman.
The pro-Oshiomhole group, Edo State Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance and Internal Democracy, was led by one Idiogbe Solomon, The Nation reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the group accused Godwin Obaseki, the state governor, of biting the fingers that fed him in his desperate bid to walk his way into power for the second time.
“Obaseki, in his desperation, failed to tell Nigerians that the decision to pay the contractor 75 per cent was taken by the State Executive Council and he (Obaseki) was a part of the decision, as the then Chairman of the Economic Team," the coalition claimed.
"The decision of the executive council was to fast-track delivery of the project. Probing of the Edo Specialist Hospital is diversionary, vindictive, unjust, unnecessary and callous.
“The judicial commission of inquiry set up by Edo governor lacks merit, as he has his biological brother in the panel, in Obaseki’s desperation to indict Comrade Oshiomhole. Sitting of the commission of inquiry is ultra vires, as the matter is subjudice.”
The coalition also warned Governor Obaseki to desist from harassing the national chairman and called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stop granting loans to the governor.
The anti-Oshiomhole group, on the other hands, insisted that Oshiomhole is not too big to face the law after he was allegedly fingered in a shoddy deal involving the purchase of equipment for a multi-billion naira Edo Specialist Hospital project.
"We want to register our grievances over the multi-billion naira Edo Specialist Hospital project, which four years ago, the past administration claimed it paid for the equipment.
"As we are speaking, the equipment has not been supplied and the person Oshiomhole’s administration paid the money is walking freely," the group through its spokesperson, Nehemiah Omogiate," said.
Meanwhile, the two protests later ended in a news conference at the press centre of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin.
