COVID-19: 70 nurses, midwives test positive for coronavirus - Health group

- About 70 nurses and midwives in Nigeria have contracted coronavirus

- Added to this, not less than 600 nurses have been subjected to test

- This was revealed by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM)

The president of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Abdurafiu Adeniji, has claimed that not less 70 nurses and midwives have tested positive for COVID-19.

Adeniji on Saturday, May 16, said that this number was recorded out of the 600 nurses who were recently subjected to the test, Daily Trust reports.

Even more, the NANNM boss stated that due to the nature of their job, nearly 1,000 nurses and midwives had been exposed to the virus.

What is even worse is that Adeniji lamented that not less than five nurses and midwives have been reported dead.

Speaking in Abuja on Saturday, Adeniji stated: “The impact of COVID-19 on Nigerian nurses and midwives cannot be overemphasized amidst tension, insufficient personal protective equipment (PPE), anxiety, inadequate provision of medical consumables and few life support equipment, absence of life insurance and the problem of transportation in some instances.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that tragedy struck as a mental health nurse and a midwife who worked at the same hospital died after contracting the deadly coronavirus.

Forty-one-year-old Lillian Mudzivare and Safaa Alam worked at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Trust.

Legit.ng gathered that Shazad, Safaa's husband who was currently grieving, said the death of his wife has left an empty feeling and space in his life.

He said: "Saf was my beautiful and full-of-life wife. She was my childhood sweetheart and we grew up together."

Lilian's husband, Moses, and their daughters issued a statement in which they expressed how they were "to lose such a wonderful person".
