COVID-19: Ganduje slashes 50% of own salary, all political appointees in Kano
- Apart from the rising death toll, coronavirus is having a very negative effect on Kano state
- The internally generated revenue of the state has drastically dropped due to the lockdown
- As a way to cushion the effect of this, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has resolved to cut his salary for May by half
- All political office holders are also expected to make the same sacrifice

Following the adverse effect of the coronavirus pandemic on internally generated revenue in Kano, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has decided to cut his May salary by 50%.
This decision by the state government also affects the salaries of the deputy governor and all political appointees in Kano, Nigerian Tribune reports.
Others are all local government chairmen, deputy chairmen, elected and supervisory councillors, advisers and secretaries of local governments.

Ganduje also mentioned that the situation in the state was partly caused by a drastic drop in the price of oil globally "which has affected the world economy and eventually caused a serious shortfall in the federation account for states..."

Moreover, regretting the effect of the lockdown in Kano, the governor said: "Almost all companies in the state are no longer in operation due to lockdown.
"Also, other areas where the state gets revenue are no longer operational. This also is another reason for giving political office holders half their salary.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that in a bid to further combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the Kano state government had announced a one-week extension of the lockdown imposed.
Malam Muhammad Garba, the state commissioner for information, made the announcement in a statement.
Garba said the decision to extend the lockdown in the state was reached after due consultations with the federal government and key stakeholders in the health sector.
The commissioner went on to note that the preventive measure was aimed at further reducing the person to person contact which is believed to be one of the major ways COVID-19 is being spread.
Acknowledging the consequences of the extension of the lockdown on the public, Garba called for the people to be patient as the battle against COVID-19 continues.
Kano state residents were urged to continue observing personal hygiene including use of face masks, social distancing, and regular hand washing.
