- John Barnes believes Odion Ighalo will be a decent signing for Man United but his £20m valuation in the post-coronavirus transfer market is a stumbling block
- According to Barnes, Ighalo is not worth the money in the current transfer market
- Man United legend Gary Neville also doubts if Ighalo is worth the money
Liverpool legend John Barnes believes Nigerian star Odion Ighalo will be a decent signing for Man United in the summer.
However, Barnes was quick to note that his parent club Shanghai Shenhua’s £20m valuation of Ighalo could be a stumbling block in the current transfer market due to coronavirus crisis, The Sun reports.
According to him, Man United can’t afford to spend £20m on Ighalo in the post-coronavirus transfer market.
Barnes said: “When you think about Odion Ighalo, a proven goal scorer and has experience in the Premier League, then £20m is very good value in this market.
"However, if you are looking at the current situation with coronavirus and the transfer market, with a player who won’t necessarily start every game, he is not worth the money.
"Under normal circumstances, £20m is nothing for a player in the transfer market, If I look at an overall player, someone who is happy to be a squad player and will help back-up players like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, then yes, he would be a decent signing for Manchester United.”
Ighalo’s loan deal with the Red Devils expires on May 31, with the striker expected to return to parent club Shangahi Shenhua for the new Chinese Premier League season.
He has scored four goals in eight games for Man United this season.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that former Manchester United star Gary Neville questioned the rationale behind the club wanting to sign 30-year-old Odion Ighalo permanently for £20million.
Ighalo made instant statement since his arrival at the Old Trafford club on loan from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua scoring four goals in his eight appearances for the Reds.
Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly impressed with the former Watford man and it was gathered that he is ready to splash £20 million ($25m) on the ex-Watford striker.
Ighalo completed a loan move to the club in January and he is billed to leave at the end of May, but the Nigerian is also willing to remain at the club until, at least, the end of the season.
However, former Nigerian international Friday Ekpo slammed Neville over his negative comments on Odion Ighalo.
The former Watford man arrived the Old Trafford on loan from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua on the January transfer deadline day and has impressed scoring four goals in his first eight games for the Reds.
However, in his reaction, ex-Nigerian international Ekpo charged that it was a very wrong comment coming from Neville.
“The guys talking are defenders, including Neville,” Ekpo told brila.net.
He continued: "He clearly does not understand the value of a good striker; for a player who came in when the team was struggling and made an instant impact?
“So, I will advise Odion to make his decision based on what he really wants; is it Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Shanghai Shenhua?
He should just make the best decision for himself."
