News about the appointment of Professor Ibrahim Gambari as the new chief of staff of President Muhammadu Buhari started as a rumour and thus termed to be mere speculation from various media sources in Nigeria.
However, the reports were confirmed and proven true when on Wednesday, May 13, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha officially presented Gambari as the CoS to the president.
Although many in the country have been too quick to conclude that this appointment was born out of tribalism on the part of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, certain facts which both influenced the choice and refuted the accusation are glaring.
First, hours after his appointment and confirmation at the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday, Gambari told journalists at State House in Abuja that he was chosen for the enviable task because of his competence to duly carry it out.
In fact, the new chief of staff pointed out that two qualities required by the president for success in the office are professionalism and loyalty - both of which he claims to be imbued with.
Added to this, many heavy-weight Nigerian politicians have lent their support to the President Buhari's decision.
To mention only a few, one of such persons is the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Congratulating Gambari, Tinubu said: "My personal knowledge of chief of staff Gambari is that he is an erudite man who knows and loves this country, who strongly believes in the Nigerian project & president’s change agenda.
"Gambari will work competently and with dedication to help President Buhari advance his policy and governance priorities just as he did in the past when he served as Minister of External Affairs in the 1980s."
Even more, the governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, has said that Gambari, a seasoned scholar and diplomat with a wealth of knowledge, is known both nationally and internationally.
Governor Bello was optimistic that the chief of staff will"fill the vacuum will further add more colour to the administration's achievements."
To crown it all, the APC stated that Gambari "will bring to bear his scholarly intellect, international network, professional and administrative experience in ensuring the smooth running of the office of the president."
