President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Ibrahim Gambari as his new chief of staff, following the death of Abba Kyari.
Gambari was officially unveiled as the new chief of staff on Wednesday, May 13, during the virtual Federal Executive Council meeting at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The new chief of staff has had a long term relationship with President Buhari; part of the reasons why many were not surprised by the president's choice.
During the military regime of the president, Professor Gambari was appointed as the minister of external affairs.
Shortly after his announcement as Kyari's successor, Tolu Ogunlesi, the special assistant to the president on digital and new media, shared a rare video of when President Buhari swore in Gambari who is from Kwara state as a minister in 1984.
The 76-year-old new chief of staff was 39 years old when President Buhari appointed him as external affairs minister.
Prior to the ministerial appointment, Gambari was the director-general of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.
"Throwback | January 1984: Dr Ibrahim Gambari, 39y/o DG of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) is sworn in by Major General M Buhari as Nigeria’s Minister of External Affairs, at Dodan Barracks, Lagos," Ogunlesi captioned the video which he posted on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised President Buhari for appointing Professor Gambari as the new chief of staff.
The former governor of Lagos in a statement described the appointment as a laudable one.
According to him, Gambari has served Nigeria in many important positions.
Going further, he added that his intellect, broad experience and skills in administration and diplomacy have adequately prepared and equipped him for the important job he now has.
Also, Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president in reaction to Gambari's appointment congratulated him.
The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said he hopes the professor will deploy his varied skills in the service of Nigeria.
"Congratulations Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, CFR on your appointment as Chief of Staff to @MBuhari. It is my hope and expectation and those of millions of Nigerians that you will deploy your varied skills garnered over the years in the service of our nation," Atiku said.
Kwara state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in his congratulatory message to Gambari said his appointment is a befitting development that is rooted in dedication, loyalty, and history.
Dino Melaye, a former member of the Nigerian Senate described the president's chief of staff as a gentleman and welcomed him on board.
Other Nigerians also took to social media to express their opinions about Gambari stating that the former diplomat was a good choice.
"May your tenure be smooth, may you continue from where Abba kyari stopped. If his age is a problem to you, just know that he is one of the brightest minds appointed as CoS in recent times. And if him being Fulani is your problem may the lord comfort you. Amin," a Twitter user, Ramadan, said.
