Coronavirus: Rivers records 16 new COVID- 19 cases
- Rivers state has recorded 16 new cases of Covid-19, the highest since the state confirmed its index case
- Governor Wike announced that some parts of the state will resume total lockdown on Sunday, May 17
- The Rivers state governor said curfew will be imposed pending the time the total lockdown will resume

The Covid-19 cases in Rivers state have spiked as the state recorded 16 new patients on Wednesday, May 13.
The Nation reports that the state governor, Nyesom Wike, also declared the total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt local government areas would resume from 8pm on Sunday, May 17 May until further notice.
Legit.ng gathers that Governor Wike said the total lockdown would no longer resume on Thursday, May 14, because the State Security Council took into consideration the suffering of the people over the last two days.

In place of the lockdown, the state council imposed a night curfew in the affected local government areas.
"Covid-19 is not only here with us; it is increasing in number of infections as we recorded 16 new cases for today, the highest since the index case, which goes to confirm not only my personal apprehension for our state and the need to be tough in our mitigation strategies," Wike said.
The River state governor appealed to the public to endure the attendant discomfort brought by the movement restrictions, saying they are an inevitable sacrifice for the common good of all.
He urged all the residents in the state to comply with all other established measures, including the compulsory wearing of face masks and the closure of our land, sea and air boundaries and entry routes, which are still in force.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a total of 25 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) expressed outrage over the recent demolition of two hotels by Governor Wike for flouting the lockdown directives of the Rivers state government.
The CSOs in a statement on Wednesday, May 13, described Governor Wike's action as “an act of impunity, assault on rule of law and setback to civilisation.”
The CSOs include notable civil rights movement like the African Centre for Media & Information Literacy, Socio-economic Rights Action Project, Legal Defence & Assistance Project, Democracy and Human Rights Network among others.
