Arsene Wenger says Kanu was his best January signing for Arsenal

- Nwankwo Kanu signed for Arsenal from Inter Milan in February 1999

- Despite arriving mid-season, he ended up becoming an important squad member for Wenger

- Kanu enjoyed a five-year spell with the Gunners as he helped them win two EPL titles and two FA Cups

Arsene Wenger has snubbed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and named Nwankwo Kanu as his best January signing for Arsenal.

Kanu joined Arsenal from Serie A side Inter Milan in a deal valued at £4.15 million deal in February 1999, and went on to become a huge success at the north London club.

During his stay with the Gunners, the former Nigerian international helped Arsenal win two Premier League titles and two FA Cups before he left to sign for West Brom five years later.

Wenger went on to make some success winter signings in the winter period for Arsenal.

The players include Nicolas Anelka, Edu and Kolo Toure all who turned out to play an integral role during Wenger's tenure.

Aubameyang who joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund before Wenger's departure also hit the ground running shortly after his arrival.

But when asked to name his best January deal on beIN Sports during his tenure, the Frenchman singled out Kanu while admitting it was a tough call to make.

"What a difficult question. Over 20 years… maybe Kanu. In the middle of the season, that had a big impact and was a huge player," he said.

Wenger further observed he is against the principle of the January transfer window as he is of the opinion clubs are allowed to sign players throughout the season as it were when he arrived in England.

"It is not right, when once you have started the season, you have to finish the season with the same players," he noted.

"Or you keep it open the whole season like it was when I arrived in England. They have chosen a rule that is not right," he added.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Arsenal star Joseph Olowu has expressed his desire to play for Nigeria having played for the England U23 national team.

Olowu who was born in Ibadan in 1999 is not age-eligible to join the Flying Eagles at the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

He also cannot play in the 2024 Olympic Games for the West African nation, but has a chance to play for the Nigerian senior national team.
