Coronavirus: COVID-19 patients hold doctors, nurse hostage in Kano

Two medical doctors and a nurse were held hostage for some hours in Kano by Covid-19 patients, creating a mild drama amid rising figures of coronavirus cases in the state.

Aminu Mohammed, former chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), made this known during a radio programme on Friday, May 8, The Cable reports.

Mohammed said the incident happened while the doctors and nurse were conducting a routine checking around the ward where the patients are being managed.

He stressed that the incident was a confirmation of the challenges being faced by health officials who need to manage hostile patients apart from treating them.

Although Tijjani Husaini, head of Kano COVID-19 technical response team, said he was not aware of the incident, Mohammed called for support for the medics facing the risk of managing the coronavirus cases.

In the late hour of Friday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 386 new cases of Covid-19 of which 65 cases belonged to Kano.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, said that the key weakness of Kano's COVID-19 response is lack of adequate manpower for surveillance and contact tracing.

Mustapha disclosed this while briefing members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, May 5, on the progress being made by the task force in the fight against the pandemic alongside the minister of health and the DG of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
