Fredie Blom is a man from Delft near Cape Town who has lived through the Spanish Flu and is currently celebrating his 116th birthday during the coronavirus pandemic.
The centenarian was born on May 8, 1904, in Adelaide, Eastern Cape. He is married to Jeanette Blom and does not have any children of his own.
On Friday, Blom turned 116 years old and he had only one wish for his birthday - to have a smoke. According to Times LIVE, Blom wants tobacco to roll his own ciggies but he can't get any under the current lockdown regulations.
His 86-year-old wife said that her hubby is stressed about having no more tobacco. She added that rolling his own ciggies with a newspaper was his hobby and now nothing can comfort him.
“He likes to be independent and he is getting frustrated."
Despite his old age, Blom has no trouble moving around on his own and doing everyday activities.
South Africans have flooded social media to wish Blom a happy birthday.
Dawn Els commented:
"May he find true comfort, a gift which does not go up in smoke! And a very happy and blessed birthday."
Patricia Vennecia Worshipp said:
"Congratulations on your birthday. Thank God for your gift of life. Hope you had a blessed day. God granted you His mercy and grace. You are truly highly favoured by God. Thank you to your family for their love, support and caring. God bless abundantly."
