Coronavirus: FG dismisses bribery allegation against NCDC officials

The federal government has dismissed the allegation that staff of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are charging N35,000 before collecting samples for Covid-19 test.

Speaking during the task force briefing on Wednesday, May 6, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation, dismissed the allegation as a lie spurious lie flying in the face of fact.

The SGF, who doubles as the chairman of the PTF on Covid-19, warned against spreading of false news in order to avoid plunging the country into crisis, This Day reports.

“The truth about it– I know what it does to somebody who is working inside out, going around exposing himself collecting samples. That’s one of the most dangerous activities in the management of COVID-19,” Mustapha said.

“I will leave my family, expose myself to this danger, and all I get is an allegation that I am asking for N35,000. What is N35,000 compared to the risk that they are taking?

"And some people will take delight in saying that you demand for N35, 000, how many Nigerians can afford N35, 000 to take a sample?"

The SGF, noting that the danger and risks in taking samples are more pronounced than what many Nigerians think, maintained that the service offered by the officials of NCDC "calls for absolute diligence" which one must be prepared and trained for.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that NCDC has confirmed 195 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3,145.

The federal health agency made the announcement via its Twitter handle at 12.01 am on Thursday, May 7.

Fifty-three more persons were discharged, bringing the total from 481 to 534 recoveries, while the number of fatalities increased from 98 to 103.

Lagos state leads the pack in the latest report with 82 cases while Kano state followed with 30 cases.
