Barely one week after the death of Alhaji Kyari Ibn Umar El-Kanemi, the Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, has appointed Umar Ibn Kyari Umar El-Kanemi as the new Shehu of Bama.
Daily Trust reports that the late Shehu of Bama passed away on April 27, at a hospital in Maiduguri the state capital.
Legit.ng gathered that the deceased was the seventh Shehu of old Dikwa Emirate that included Bama, Dikwa, Ngala and Kala-Balge local government areas of the state before it was, in 2010, split into two: Bama and Dikwa emirates headed by two separate first class emirs.
Speaking on the appointment of Umar El-Kanemi, the secretary to Borno state government, Usman Jidda Shuwa, on behalf of the governor presented an appointment letter to the Shehu at the palace in Bama town on the afternoon of Monday, May 4, The Nation reports.

The letter read: “I am directed by His Excellency to direct you to remain in Bama so that you can give a sense of belonging to the people, your role as a leader is very crucial and principal to the establishment of civil authorities in Bama.
“Your appointment was based on your proven integrity impeccable record of service to the people of Bama local government and in particular service to humanity in general.
“Your Royal Highness Sir, this appointment is conferred on you by the executive Governor of Borno State; you are hereby expected to exhibit a high sense of justice, equity, fairness to all people of Bama.”
The SSG informed that the appointment was based on the recommendations of the kingmakers of Bama emirate council.
Shehu Umar, until his appointment, was a businessman.

Responding on behalf of Bama emirate council, Kaigama of Bama, Baba Kura Kaigama expressed his appreciation to Governor Zulum for choosing Shehu Umar as the new emir of Bama.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari expressed sadness over the news of the death of Alhaji Modu Sheriff, Galadima of Borno Emirate, and the father of former governor Ali Sheriff of Borno.
It was reported that the president, in a statement by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Thursday, April 23, extended heartfelt commiserations to Governor Zulum and the family of Sheriff.
President Buhari also commiserated with the Shehu of Borno, and the entire Borno emirate council on the passing of their illustrious son and community leader fondly loved and respected by his people.
