A group of researchers at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has recommended the regular consumption of a blend of cocoa-zobo-ginger beverages which has the potential to boost the immunity of people against communicable diseases and viruses.
The researchers led by Nathaniel Fagbemi, a professor of food science technology noted that of Hibiscus sabdariffa (zobo) and ginger blends and natural cocoa powder possesse high antioxidant activities that can boost immunity against diseases and viruses, Premium Times.
The researchers said the research has shown that functional beverages that are high in antioxidants like the zobo-ginger-cocoa drink can adequately protect against oxidative stress and boost immunity in case of stress or diseases.
They said better immunity helps to fend off diseases and also improves the chances of survival of ill persons.
The researchers stated that the cocoa-zobo-ginger beverage could be made in cold or hot water extracts making it vital in the hot tropical climate as well as in the cold harmattan seasons obtained in Nigeria.
They said its ingredients are easily available and can be made and enjoyed by all strata of the society.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Madagascar is using its own herbal remedy to treat the coronavirus
The country has recorded 128 coronavirus cases, and 92 out of that number have recovered, leaving 36 active cases. Also, no death has been recorded in the country.
Madagascar is said to be using its own medicine to treat the virus. President Andry Rajoelina launched the herbal tea, named COVID-Organics, on Monday, April 20.
President Rajoelina said: “All trials and tests have been conducted and its effectiveness in reducing the elimination of symptoms have been proven for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 in Madagascar.”
The herbal medicine developed by Malagasy Institute of Applied Research and branded COVID-Organics, contains Artemisia- a plant on the Island used in the fight against malaria.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is no proof of a cure for Covid-19, warning against the widespread use of untested remedies.
