Matteo Darmian: Ex-Man Utd star says Rashford can compete for Ballon d'Or

Former Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has disclosed that although the Old Trafford club have great players, he thinks Marcus Rashford will become a great player.

Darmian who spent five years at the Premier League club stated this in his latest interview with Guardian, adding that Wayne Rooney was a standout player at the club.

He explained that 22-year-old Rashford will become great as he narrated how the English player first impressed on his first training with the first team as a teenager.

He said: “I still remember Marcus Rashford’s first session with the senior squad like it was yesterday. I immediately thought: Wow, this is an incredible player.”

“He did so many impressive things for a player of his age and the way he improved in every detail really impressed me.”

“If he continues to work the way he has done so far he can be a Ballon d’Or winner. I’m convinced of this. He impressed me the most of all the players at United and he’s very young and can still improve. For me he can reach the level of Kylian Mbappé and compete for the Ballon d’Or for years to come.”

Rashford made instant statement at Manchester United as he scored two goals on both his first-team debut against Midtjylland in the UEFA Europa League in February 2016 and his Premier League debut against Arsenal three days later.

He has now made a total of 201 appearances for the club in all competitions and having 64 goals to his credit.

Recently, Cristiano Ronaldo who is now at the twilight of his career is keeping an eye on potential youngsters and in 2017, he named six players, including Rashford, who could succeed him when he was asked.
