- A man bought a second-hand chest of drawers to furnish his new apartment
- However, Petar Gavran, who hails from Croatia, got more than he paid for
- Petar discovered about N10.5m in the drawers and decided to return it to the rightful owners
A man, Petar Gavran, who hails from Croatia, wanted to find a cupboard for his new apartment in Germany.
So, he purchased a second-hand one online. Petar and a friend visited the seller’s house in the Werden borough of the city of Essen to fetch the cupboard.
He was quoted by News24 saying:
“When a friend and I came for the furniture, we didn't notice anything strange. Even the man we bought the furniture from helped us carry it to the car because it's massive."
However, when they had carried the piece of furniture up the stairs, Petar heard something rolling around inside.
Upon inspection, he found family albums and 25,000 euros - which is about N10.5m - stuffed in several envelopes. At first, he did not know what to do but he ended up phoning the family who had sold him the cupboard.
They asked him to return the albums and he discovered they were not aware of the money inside the drawers.
The chest belonged to a deceased family member and they had no idea there was over N10 million stored inside.
However, Petar could not be dishonest and he gave them the money back. He said he would not have been able to spend it and it would not bring him happiness.
The family gave him an undisclosed reward. Peter's brother, Antonio Gavran, took to Facebook to gush about his honesty.
Translated into English, Antonio wrote:
"Proud of brother Petar Gavran. He bought a cabinet online from an apartment that was empty and found several tens of thousands of euros in it. A few hours of search and the owner was found who wasn't even aware that the money was left. Her joy for finding the lost, and for him a memory for life and pleasure by the fact that he did a good deed. It's good to do good."
It's not the first time someone found a large sum of money hidden in furniture and decided to return it.
Legit.ng reported Howard Kirby bought a couch for his man cave in December. However, the man, who hails from the US, complained that one of the cushions was uncomfortable.
Kirby's daughter decided to open it up and they made a startling discovery. The daughter started pulling out money and they ended up with a total of $43 170 - which is an estimated N15.7m.
Because he is a Christian, Kirby did not keep the money and returned it to the rightful owners.
