SGF Mustapha says almajiris system will overwhelm Nigeria in future

The Secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has warned that the almajiri system will present overwhelming challenges for Nigeria in the future if not dealt with urgently.
Mustapha issued the warning during his speech at the presidential task force briefing on COVID-19 on Monday, April 27, Premium Times reports.

He said Nigeria must provide for the welfare of the almajiri students and prepare them for the future.
The SGF pointed out that there is nothing wrong about young Muslim students learning the dictates of their faith, but noted that they should be equipped to be productive citizens in the future.
”Equip them, skill them so that they can become educated in their state and also productive citizens in the future.
”If we do not deal with the issues relating to the almajiris, we are building an army that would overwhelm us as a people and as a nation in the future,” he said.
Mustapha’s warning was in reaction to the decision of some northern governors to ban the almajiri system as part of measures to check the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Meanwhile, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state on Monday, April 27, announced the immediate deportation of Almajiris and all other beggars to their states of origin.
According to Wike, deporting the Almajiris had become necessary to protect the people of Rivers state from the threat the beggars' present in spreading coronavirus.
Legit.ng gathered that the governor who disclosed this in a state broadcast on COVID-19 and shared on his official social media pages said some parts of Rivers state will be on complete lockdown.
The affected areas in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor local government areas include Elekahia, Rumuomasi, Stadium road, and Rumuobiokani.

He explained that the 24 hours complete lockdown starts Tuesday, April 28, and would last till further notice.
