Illegal mining: Police arrest two Chinese nationals in Zamfara (photos)

- The police in Zamfara have arrested two Chinese nationals over illegal mining in the state

- According to Zamfara police command's spokesperson, the Chinese are being interrogated to get more information to further investigate illegal mining in the state

- The federal government had in 2019 banned all mining activities, following the spate of banditry in the state

Two Chinese nationals have been arrested by the Zamfara state police command for allegedly engaging in illegal mining in the state.

The spokesperson of the command, Mohammad Shehu, disclosed this in a statement released on Monday, April 27, Daily Nigerian reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Shehu said the two Chinese nationals, identified Messrs WANG and CHUN are being interrogated at the command.

“The Command had On 19th April, 2020 received information that some foreigners in concert with other unpatriotic Nigerians engaged in illegal mining activities in Kwali, Bukkuyum LGA of the state," Shehu said as he narrated how the illegal miners were arrested.

“On the strength of the information, on 20th April, 2020, the commissioner of police CP Usman Nagogo psc+ led a special task force team to Kwali mining sites to assess and see things for himself. The information proved to be credible one as hundreds of miners scattered as soon as they saw the team.

“Two labourers were however arrested who confirmed the presence of Chinese and Bulkinabe Nationals among others.

“On 25thth April, 2020 information had it that a Chinese and Bulkinabe Nationals are taking shelter somewhere in Nasarawa Burkullu," the police spokesman continued.

“On 26th April, 2020 the Commissioner of Police led another team to the same Village where two Chinese Nationals were seen with all the chemicals necessary for making gold.

“The two Chinese Nationals Mr WANG and Mr CHUN are being interrogated to get more information that could help the course of investigation,” Shehu concluded.

Recall that the federal government had in 2019 banned all mining activities, following the spate of banditry in the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Nigerian troops killed 21 bandits after a fierce battle at Zurmi in Zurumi local government area of Zamfara state.

The defence headquarters disclosed in a statement on Wednesday, April 22, that four soldiers were killed during the military operation.

The military said troops have commenced patrols in the area for domination and confidence-building among the locals.

The army urged the public to provide credible information about the operation of the bandits to assist the military rid the country of the criminal elements.

In another report, the administration of Governor Bello Matawalle in Zamfara state has announced the confirmation of two COVID-19 cases in the northern state.

The governor made the announcement in the early hours of Saturday, April 25 in confirmation of the tests conducted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Matawalle is, however, pleased that the confirmed cases were so few. He claimed this was as a result of the efforts put in by his government to ensure that the state was not overrun by the pandemic.

The governor said, with the new cases, the state government would announce new measures to tighten control on the spread since the virus has now reached Zamfara's borders.

“Hence, later in the day, I will announce additional measures to be taken in order to further protect our citizens from the spread of this deadly virus in our dear state," Matawalle announced.

The governor urged the citizens in the state to observe social distancing, use face masks, hand sanitizer and keep away from crowds as much as possible.
