COVID-19/Boko Haram: Religious group commences 21-days fasting, prayers

- A religious group has announced its plan to host a 21-days prayer and fasting session

- The group said the session which would take place online will be significantly different from previous prayer sessions held across the country

- According to the president of the group, the session will seek divine intervention to the end crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic

Clerics across religious groups have launched a 21-day of fasting and prayers session to seek divine intervention to the end of ravages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace (NIFROP) said the prayer and fasting will also take into consideration, all activities of the Nigerian Miltary against Boko Haram.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, April 27, the president of NIFROP, Bishop Sunday Garuba, said the fasting and prayers will be remotely held with prayers sessions streamed online.

Garuba said the session would conform with the requirement for social distancing as part of measures to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

The fasting and prayer, which kicks off today (Monday, April 27, 2020), the Bishop said will be significantly different from previous prayer sessions held by the group for which its members congregated physically.

Garuba said clerics of the Christian and Muslim faiths will be joining the prayers from across the country and from several other locations from across the world.

According to him, the group is mindful of the need for social distancing as advised by international and local health experts for the prevention of the spread of the novel Coronavirus disease.

“This fasting and prayers is our contribution and support for the ongoing global efforts to prevent the killer coronavirus from spreading and killing more people," Garuba said

"We will be interceding for God to divinely stop the virus in its track while giving knowledge to our doctors and scientists to find the weak point of the virus and be able to develop solutions, be it vaccines or cures. Humanity needs the mercy and compassion of God at a time like this," he said.

Bishop Garuba also said that that NIFROP, which is also known as the Unity Church and Unity Masjid, will be using the period to support vulnerable families with food items and direct cash transfer to those who have fallen on hard times within the period.

He explained that: “During the 21- Days period, the Unity Church and Unity Masjid will be embarking on intercession for God's intervention, we will also distribute foodstuffs with other essential palliatives and cash transfers on daily basis to indigent families.”

He said the prayers will expose more about those that have been hiding behind Boko Haram and using the terrorists to torment Nigerians.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Borno state government has found one of the two COVID-19 patients in the state who fled after testing positive for the infectious disease.

The state government Abbas Kaka Hassan, a 24-year-old male, who tested positive for COVID-19 has been traced.

The state's commissioner of health, Dr Salisu Kwayabura said Hassan was traced in the early hours of today (Monday) in Maiduguri.

Also, the Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum had imposed a total lockdown in Borno state as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state increased.

Governor Zulum announced the lockdown which took effect from 10.30 pm on Wednesday, April 22, in a state-wide broadcast on Monday night, April 20.
