Two COVID-19 patients flee after testing positive in Borno

- Two patients have fled after testing positive for COVID-19 at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno state

- The state commissioner for health, Salisu Kwayabura, identified the patients as Abbas Kaka Hassan, a 24-year-old male and Hauwa Mohammed, a 42-year-old female

- Kwayabura said both patients went into hiding to avoid being taken to an isolation centre

Two patients have fled after testing positive for COVID-19 at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno state.

The Borno state commissioner for health, Dr Salisu Kwayabura, on Sunday, April 26, disclosed that one of the patients, whose name is Abbas Kaka Hassan, is a 24-year-old male, while the other Hauwa Mohammed, is a 42-year-old female, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Kwayabura stated that both patients went into hiding to avoid being taken to an isolation centre.

He said the Borno state response team for the prevention and control of COVID-19 was in initial telephone contact with the male patient after his sample was collected.

The commissioner noted that the patient eventually switched off his phone when he learnt he tested positive.

“When samples of patients with contacts to index cases are collected, they are normally advised to go on self-isolation. They give their contacts so they can be reached when the results are out, the commissioner said.

He explained that people with suspected contact cannot be detained as the team does not have the lawful powers to do that.

The commissioner who noted that the team was working hard to track the patients in hiding, called on anyone who tests positive for the disease not to regard it as a death sentence.

Meanwhile, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, on Sunday, April 26, stressed the importance of staying at home as the country continues to battle the rise in coronavirus cases.
