Coronavirus: Police break up funeral, arrest people for violating lockdown order

- Several people were arrested in Kaduna state on Saturday, April 25, for violating the government's lockdown order

- The police officers also broke up a crowd of villagers who attended the burial of a young man

- The Kaduna state government had passed a law banning all social gatherings with the aim of curbing the spread of COVID-19

Kaduna state police have dispersed a crowd of villagers at the burial of a young man held on Saturday, April 25, at Maraban Rido community in Chikun local government area of the state.

According to Channels TV, the security operatives arrested several people while dispersing the gathering for violating the state government's lockdown order.

Recall that in an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state, Kaduna government had banned all social gatherings, including burial and wedding ceremonies.

Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner for internal security and home affairs in Kaduna state, intercepted the villagers during an inspection tour of with heads of security agencies in some parts of the state.

The state commissioner of police, Umar Muri, on his part, stated that the burial violated the government’s directive banning ceremonies and other social gatherings.

He said: “Residents are really underestimating this pandemic; somebody died and they gathered, more than 50 people. It cannot be tolerated in this state and it cannot be tolerated in the entire country."

The police commissioner warned residents of the state to desist from social gathering and added that whoever violates the curfew will definitely be arrested and face the wrath of the law.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Lagos state police command confirmed the arrest of no fewer than 202 people who violated the lockdown ordered by the federal government of Nigeria to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The command posted on its official Twitter handle that the suspects were arrested in different parts of the Lagos metropolis for converging, thereby violating the order on social distancing during the lockdown.

According to the police, the people converged to play football and do aerobic exercises among other things. In the photo of the arrested suspects tweeted by the police, Legit.ng confirmed that many of them were in sports gear.

In other news, a police inspector was arrested in Lagos on Wednesday, April 1, alongside two others in his vehicle for violating the stay-at-home order by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Lagos police command said the officer who was not on duty was going about his private business, disregarding the stay-at-home order.
