Coronavirus: Plateau begins investigation of leaked COVID-19 results

- Plateau government says it has begun an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the leak of the confidential laboratory result of some suspected COVID-19 cases

- The test was carried out at the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) Testing Centre in Vom

The Plateau government has begun an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the leak of the confidential laboratory result of some suspected coronavirus (COVID-19) cases carried out at the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) Testing Centre in Vom.

Legit.ng gathered that the commissioner for information and communication, Dan Manjang, stated this in a press release issued on Sunday, April 26, in Jos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Thursday, April 23, the result of a suspected person with COVID-19, which tested positive, was circulating in different platforms of social media.

According to the report, this went on before the official announcement by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Plateau government.

The patient, who is the state’s index case, came into Jos from Kano on April 17.

The commissioner said the government was disappointed over such an unprofessional act, which had breached ethical medical standards and exposed the suspected case to negative consequences, including stigmatization and discrimination.

He said the state government totally condemned the act, which “regrettably has the tendency of jeopardising” its efforts in fighting the coronavirus pandemic that is ravaging the world.

Manjang said that the state was conducting investigations to unravel those responsible for the unethical act with a view of punishing them to forestall future occurrence.

He said the investigation would cover the entire process of the test, from sample collection, investigation and result dissemination.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the Borno government announced the arrest of a person who tested positive of coronavirus pandemic after leading the burial of an index case in the state.

It was reported that the patient managed to escape and sneaked into the Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri, where he mingled with his family and relatives.

This was disclosed on Saturday, April 25, by the state commissioner for health, who is also a member of the state's high powered response team for the prevention and control of COVID-19, Salisu Kwayabura.

He made this known during the daily media update on the virus at the multi-purpose hall of the state government house.

He noted that upon receiving an alert about whereabouts of the patient, the committee went to the Bakassi IDPs camp within the metropolis and took the patient to an Isolation centre and now receiving treatment without any sign of symptoms.
