Coronavirus: Fleeing COVID-19 patient arrested in Borno state

- The Borno government has arrested a patient of COVID-19 who sneaked into IDPs camp in the state

- The COVID-19 patient led the burial of an index case in the state

- According to the report, he was tested positive of coronavirus after the burial of the index case

The Borno government has announced the arrest of a person who tested positive of coronavirus pandemic after leading the burial of an index case in the state.

Legit.ng's regional reporter in Borno, Inusa Ndahi, reports that the patient managed to escape and sneaked into the Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri, where he mingled with his family and relatives.

This was disclosed on Saturday, April 25, by the state commissioner for health, who is also a member of the state's high powered response team for the prevention and control of COVID-19, Salisu Kwayabura.

He made this known during the daily media update on the virus at the multi-purpose hall of the state government house.

He noted that upon receiving an alert about whereabouts of the patient, the committee went to the Bakassi IDPs camp within the metropolis and took the patient to an Isolation centre and now receiving treatment without any sign of symptoms.

In furtherance to the directives from the state governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, that the total lockdown imposed on the city would be relaxed on Monday, April 27 and Thursday 30, the commissioner said the development would provide an opportunity for the populace to restock.

He, however, assured that the committee would provide adequate face masks, sanitizers for people, watch their hands before, during and after they enter any market within the metropolis.

On the total number of confirmed cases, Kwayabura said: "Positive cases remains 15, while the two suspected cases from Dikwa who were brought into the state have been tested negative to the virus."

Out of the 15 positive cases, the commissioner said 12 are contacts from the index cases, while 3 were independent of the index cases.

He said seven of the cases are in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) isolation centre, while 5 are at the Brigadier General Abba Memorial Hospital Isolation centre within the metropolis.

Kwayabura added that the 17 samples taken from Pulka where the first index case emanated, have been tested negative to the virus.

He appreciated the level of compliance being demonstrated by the people of the state since the lockdown and urged them to continue to give their maximum support to the state government defeat COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Nigeria recorded 87 new cases of coronavirus pandemic as Lagos state took the lead with 33 while Borno, Osun, and Katsina have 18, 12, and 9 respectively.
