Man cries out, says police made him lose his mum due to N20k bribe

- A Nigerian man has narrated a heart-wrenching experience he had while taking his hypertensive mother to the hospital

- He says he was rushing his mother to the hospital when he was pulled over by the police, who insisted on N20,000 bribe

- The man says his mother died when the police delayed him because of N20,000

A Nigerian man has taken to Twitter to reveal how officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) made him lose his mother because of N20,000 bribe amid the coronavirus lockdown in Rivers state.

The man identified on Twitter as peterugavah said he was rushing his hypertensive mother to the hospital and was pulled over by the police.

According to him, the police officers insisted on taking N20,000 cash bribe before he is allowed to go.

He tweeted: "This morning my mom who has been managing hypertension for over 20 yrs passed away right there in the car while I was taking her to the hospital this morning simply because men of the @PoliceNG insisted that I have to part with 20,000 naire before they will let us pass.

"I am in pains right now , I have now become an orphan all because of this lock down. My mom would not have died if we had arrived at the hospital early enough. I even offered to make a transfer these officers refused, thy said it will be traceable , they needed cash .

"Even after pleading with them for over an hour , these heartless officers refused to all us move. They made me sit there and watch my mom pass away before my eyes. I doubt if I will ever be normal again after this. I hate this country .

"So many lives is being lost daily due to this lock down and sadly it is not covid 19 that is killing them. The anger I feel right now is totally overwhelming."

He, however, asked Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state if people are not allowed to take their loved ones who need medical care to the hospital, adding that are people supposed to sit at home and die.

In other news, Esther Akinsanya, a 55-year-old nurse and mother of two has died of coronavirus in a London hospital.

She worked in the same hospital with her sister Mary Idowu, who is said to be fighting for her own life in intensive care.

Esther and her sister lived together at the Queen Elizabeth in Woolwich.

They were rushed to the hospital within hours of each other two weeks ago but Esther died four days later on April 15.
