U.S eulogises Abba Kyari, hails his role in returning over $300m stolen by Abacha

- The U.S. government has eulogized the late Abba Kyari in a condolence message to President Muhammadu Buhari

- The assistant secretary of state for African affairs, Tibor Nagy, described Kyari as a dedicated public servant

- Nagy also lauded the important role Kyari played in the repatriation of over $300m stolen by the late Sani Abacha

The United States government has commiserated with President Muhammadu Buhari over the passing of his chief of staff Mallam Abba Kyari.

In its condolence message to the Nigerian leader, the American government described Kyari as a dedicated public servant and respected interlocutor for the American government.

This was disclosed by the president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, in a series of tweets on Friday, April 24.

The presidential spokesperson noted that Tibor Nagy, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, narrated how the late chief of staff played an important role in the return of $300m Abacha loot.

The U.S. government while commiserating with the government and Nigerians, on the death of Kyari, pledged to stand with Nigeria in the struggle against the global pandemic called coronavirus.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Economist of London described Kyari, the late chief of staff to President Buhari, as an honourable man.

The Economist in a piece published on Thursday, April 23, said the late chief of staff was often bothered about the degree of corruption in the country and thought of ways to end it.

The magazine made reference to an instance when the boss of an energy company “forgot” a bag stuffed with $100 bills at his office but Kyari was quoted to have said: “much too much of our work is spent on stopping our own people stealing”.

In a related development, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, has revealed his last encounter with Kyari.

Adesina in his tribute to Kyari on Friday, April 24, recounted how the late chief of staff appeared in his dream the night before he died. He recalled that in the dream which occurred on Thursday, April 16, the late Kyari, who stood to wait for him, “oddly” did not wear his usual ‘flowing Agbada’ and was heavily bearded.
